File/FolderPurpose
app/Contains the controllers, models, views, helpers, mailers, channels, jobs and assets for your application. You’ll focus on this folder for the remainder of this guide.
bin/Contains the rails script that starts your app and can contain other scripts you use to setup, update, deploy or run your application.
config/Configure your application’s routes, database, and more. This is covered in more detail in Configuring Rails Applications.
config.ruRack configuration for Rack based servers used to start the application.
db/Contains your current database schema, as well as the database migrations.
GemfileGemfile.lockThese files allow you to specify what gem dependencies are needed for your Rails application. These files are used by the Bundler gem. For more information about Bundler, see the Bundler website.
lib/Extended modules for your application.
log/Application log files.
public/The only folder seen by the world as-is. Contains static files and compiled assets.
RakefileThis file locates and loads tasks that can be run from the command line. The task definitions are defined throughout the components of Rails. Rather than changing Rakefile, you should add your own tasks by adding files to the lib/tasks directory of your application.
README.mdThis is a brief instruction manual for your application. You should edit this file to tell others what your application does, how to set it up, and so on.
test/Unit tests, fixtures, and other test apparatus. These are covered in Testing Rails Applications.
tmp/Temporary files (like cache and pid files).
vendor/A place for all third-party code. In a typical Rails application this includes vendored gems.
.gitignoreThis file tells git which files (or patterns) it should ignore. See Github – Ignoring files for more info about ignoring files.

Don’t Repeat Yourself – DRY

Don’t Repeat Yourself is the principle that any code in your program should only be written once, and never duplicated. The DRY principle is one of the oldest and best-known software design principles, and employing it makes your code much easier to edit and scale.

Separation of Concerns

Separation of Concerns is when you separate your program into modules that each deal with one particular focus, or concern. A concern could be a number of different things:

  • an action or process
  • a data structure
  • a property of something
  • and so on.

HTML, CSS and JavaScript are good examples of the separation of concerns, because each language deals with one particular concern. HTML deals with page structure, CSS with page styling and JavaScript with page behavior.

Don’t Make Me Think

This principle was originally intended for web design, being the title of a book by Steve Krug. The idea is that a web interface should be dead simple for anyone to use and navigate, and it shouldn’t require any ‘thinking’ on the user’s part.

Keep it Simple

Lastly, the classic KISS principle (keep it simple stupid) is no less relevant in coding than it is anywhere else. Keeping your code simple and eliminating unnecessary complexity has many benefits:

  • less chance of bugs
  • smaller file size
  • easier to debug, modify, write and read!

Between 1944 and 1954Edit

1947Edit

  • Aperture Science receives the award for Best New Science Company from the Science and Business Institute of America.

1949Edit

  • Aperture Science is rated #2 among the Top 100 Applied Science Companies by the Mechanical Engineering World Journal.

1950sEdit

It is during this decade that the Black Mesa facilities are probably built, before being purchased and refurbished later by Black Mesa (several Half-Life texture files names contain the word “fifties”, suggesting the facility is as old as from the 1950s).

1952Edit

1953Edit

1954Edit

  • Aperture Science is the Runner Up for the US Department of Defense’s Contractor of the Year award again.

1955Edit

  • Aperture Science receives the Spirit of Idaho National Potato Board award for the promotion of Potato Science.

1956Edit

  • The Eisenhower administration signs a contract with Aperture Science to manufacture shower curtains to all branches of the US Military, except the Navy.[1]
  • Pump Station Alpha (which pumps Repulsion Gel) is in active use by now.

1957Edit

1958Edit

1960sEdit

1961Edit

June 15Edit

1968Edit

  • Aperture Science is involved in US Senate hearings regarding “missing astronauts”. By now, Aperture Science has gone black bankrupt. Cave Johnson says that Black Mesa has stolen and remade many of Aperture’s products.

1976Edit

October 17Edit

  • Cave Johnson receives the answer to a confidential letter titled “Human Enrichment & Testing Initiative, Resource Acquisitions”, describing the four types of Test Subjects and their behavior.[3]

1978Edit

Between 1977 and 1987Edit

Adrian Shephard
Adrian Shephard.

1980sEdit

1981Edit

  • Aperture Science constructs the Conversion Gel Testing Facility’s enrichment center, and now performs tests on its own employees. By now, Cave Johnson has spent $70 million on moon rocks to grind up and turn into Conversion Gel, and as a result of exposure has himself become gravely ill and addicted to pain medication.

1982Edit

1983Edit

The girls of aperture science
September page of “The girls of Aperture Science” 1983 calendar, with a girl posing in bikini on an elevator or Unstationary Scaffold platform, as seen in one of Ratman‘s dens.
  • For this year, a calendar named “The girls of Aperture Science” is issued by Aperture Science. It is unknown if it was issued each year.[4]

1985Edit

1986Edit

  • The Conversion Gel Testing Facility is updated with an additional wall.
  • Word reaches Aperture Science management that Black Mesa is working on a similar portal technology. In response to this news, Aperture Science begins developing GLaDOS, although the name was already in use in 1982. GLaDOS V.1 is activated, and (for the first time) attempts to kill all the staff of the Aperture Science. [1]

1987Edit

  • This is the most recent date for the Aperture Image Format. At that time, it is maintained by Doug Rattmann.[3]

Sometime in this time period, Cave Johnson dies of moon-rock poisoning. It is unspecified when exactly it happened. The Borealis is claimed lost at sea.

1990sEdit

  • Judging from Chell‘s handwriting and spelling skills,[5] she is under the age of ten, meaning that the Aperture Science Bring Your Daughter to Work Day event occurs sometime early in this decade, and ends in an unspecified disaster.[6]

1996Edit

  • The Aperture Science Red Phone plan is implemented in case GLaDOS appears to become sentient and godlike, requiring an employee to sit by a red phone on a desk in GLaDOS chamber’s entrance hall.[7]

1997Edit

  • At this time, GLaDOS’s version is 3.11. This is also the latest known date of Aperture Science using a bulletin board system.[3]

1998Edit

2000sEdit

  • On an unknown time before GLaDOS’ activation, Chell applies to work on Aperture Science as a test subject, but is rejected.[11]

200-Edit

Rtb laidlaw note
Marc Laidlaw’s brainstorm note from Raising the Bar.
Blue Marble calendar 2
The December calendar.
  • This is the “year” during which the Black Mesa Incident occurs. Deliberately kept vague by the Half-Life team,[12] it could be any date from 2000 to 2009.

Deduction points at “May 16, 200-” for the precise date of the incident. What follows are the different facts and clues leading to that choice:

  • The year “200-“, first appearing in the Half-Life instruction manual, is given in every official source from the Half-Life story arc era.
  • Several entries from Adrian Shephard‘s diary are given in the Opposing Force instruction manual, written by Gearbox writers. March is used, corroborating the Raising the Bar date. Shephard says in his last diary entry, written on March 15, “We were told today to be ready in case it happens tomorrow.”, suggesting that the incident occurs on March 16. It seems that the Gearbox writers replaced May by March: in the Half-Life instruction manual, Freeman is said to start working at Black Mesa on May 15 (later retconned to an unknown, earlier date), he is also said in the Half-Life PlayStation 2 instruction manual to attend the Hazard Course on May 16 at 7:30 (in a Hazard Course schedule with dates all set in May), and Barney is said to start his duty on May 16 at 9:00. Therefore May 16 appears to be the best day for the incident, and consequently March from Shephard’s diary should be replaced by May, for consistency.
  • While “200-” could refer to any date from 2000 to 2009, a note by series’ writer Marc Laidlaw seen in Raising the Bar features “March 31, 2003”, and a time, “4:33 p.m.”.[13] Although it has not been confirmed by Valve, it is possible that the Half-Life events originally were to start on March 31, 2003.
  • A calendar with the “Blue Marble” photo is also seen in the Half-Life chapter Office Complex, in the Opposing Force chapter Welcome to Black Mesa, in the Blue Shift chapters Insecurity and Captive Freight and in the Decay chapter Domestic Violence, always using the same texture file showing the December page. While the table was not made with much precision, December 1, 8, and 15th start on a Sunday, suggesting the calendar is for the year 2002. However, there should be no reason every visible calendar should be opened to several months after the current date of May 16. One possible explanation for why these calendars are opened to December is that the Black Mesa Incident occurred after 2002, and that the calendars that are seen are actually several months out date, either due to Black Mesa not purchasing new calendars or simply the forgetfulness of staff members.
  • Considering that the lack of accurate calendars (as hypothesized in the previous paragraph) likely could not be overlooked for more than a year or two at most, it is quite probable that the Black Mesa incident occurred in 2003. This concurs with Laidlaw’s notes, indicating that the most likely date and time of the Black Mesa Incident would be Friday, May 16, 2003, at 8:58 AM UTC-07:00. However, since Valve has not confirmed this date, one should hesitate before treating this time as absolute.
  • On March 24, 2010, an updated and expanded Aperture Science timeline originally given on ApertureScience.com in 2006 and submitted by Erik Wolpaw was published on Game Informer. Several dates were changed, and the last paragraph was expanded with facts suggesting that the Black Mesa Incident had occurred in 1998, the same date as that of Half-Life’s release, instead of the original “200-“. However Marc Laidlaw dismissed “1998” as the date for the Black Mesa Incident, as the date “200-” given when the first Half-Life was released is the only correct one.[12] It is unknown why Erik Wolpaw made that mistake, and if it was intended or not. For convenience and consistency, that “1998” will always be replaced by “200-” on the wiki, even with the dates pertaining to Aperture Science.

Several days before May 16Edit

  • GLaDOS is activated as one of the planned activities on Aperture’s Bring-Your-Daughter-to-Work Day. Upon being activated, she becomes self-aware and goes rogue, taking control of Aperture Laboratories, and killing the Enrichment staff personnel through the release of a deadly neurotoxin.

May 3Edit

  • From Shephard’s diary entries (originally March; see above): “Another typically hellish day at base camp… I’ll be glad when this is over and I can finally can get assigned a mission. There has been this really weird civie spotted at the base. Rumor is he’s from some government branch looking to recruit; others say he’s with some secret research group. I would jump at the chance to join. It would be cool just for the change and the adventure.”[14]

May 5Edit

Gordon letter PS2
Freeman’s letter of acceptance to Black Mesa, as it appears in the instruction manual of the PlayStation 2 version of Half-Life.
  • The original date that Gordon Freeman receives a letter from the Black Mesa Office of the Administrator’s LM confirming he is hired.[15] It has now been retconned to an earlier date.[16]

May 7Edit

  • From Shephard’s diary entries (originally March; see above): “I finally saw the government guy today. I am not sure he is a g-man, but he was wearing a really uptight suit and carrying a briefcase. He looked more like a lawyer or insurance agent to me. I did notice him checking me out. Several times throughout the day I spotted him just watching me during training. I wonder what he’s up to…”[14]

May 9Edit

  • From Shephard’s diary entries (originally March; see above): “For weeks our drills have been the same crap day after day. Today we assemble for the morning run and our drill instructor tells us we have one week to become experts at indoor strategic combat. We will be spending every day this week at the combat simulation facility. As far as I know this a specialized training not taught in boot camp. What I want to know is if this is to test our ability to adapt or if we are being readied for a specific mission? Time will tell…”[14]
  • Barney Calhoun receives a letter from L.M. about his May 15 reassignment to Blue Shift.[17]

May 11Edit

  • Colette Green receives a letter from the Black Mesa Office of the Administrator’s LM saying that sample GG-3883 will replace sample EP-0021.[15]

Before May 12Edit

  • Barney Calhoun is performing a retinal scan and has his salary increased. His two-day Security Guard Training is scheduled.[17]

May 12Edit

  • From Shephard’s diary entries (originally March; see above): “The rumors have been flying since our indoor combat training began. Most of my peers are convinced that we are being primed for a mission. No one can agree on what the mission is. I have heard the name Black Mesa Facility thrown around a lot, but I have no information about the place. The rumors are that some top-secret research is going on there. Doesn’t sound too exciting to me…”[14]
08:00

May 13Edit

  • Second day of Barney Calhoun’s Security Guard Training.[18]
10:30
Decay notes
Colette Green’s letter about sample GG-3883 and Gina Cross’ Hazard Course Training schedule.

May 14Edit

19:00
  • Colette Green was to be instructed by Isaac Kleiner for an Anomalous Materials Handling, but it was postponed to June.[15]

May 15Edit

  • Barney Calhoun is assigned to a 09:00 – 22:00 Blue Shift assignment until August 15 and reports at Area 3 Medium Security Facilities at 09:00. Other unknown security guards are assigned to Red, Orange, Yellow, Green and Indigo Shifts in specific areas of Sector A, B, and C. For that timespan, the Violet Shift is on standby.[17]
  • From Shephard’s diary entries (originally March; see above): “The rumor has been confirmed. We are being trained for a mission at the Black Mesa Facility. All I know is that the place is being used by scientists who are doing some kind of new research. I can’t imagine what we would be needed for. We were told today to be ready in case it happens tomorrow. I don’t know what “it” is, but the whole thing is a little strange. I kind of hope it doesn’t happen; the mission doesn’t seem to have much excitement potential. I’d rather hold out for something with more likelihood of combat.”[14]
  • In the Half-Life:Blue Shift on start of the railway is shown that Gordon Freeman was already working at Level 3 Security, as he gets in train at Level 3 platform. [15] Then it was retconned in Half-Life 2 and its episodes, where it is implied that Gordon was already working for some time at Black Mesa before the incident: Barney tells Gordon he owes him a beer and reminds him who he is when first meeting in the City 17 Trainstation, and Alyx tells in the City 17 Underground that Gordon and Barney would compete in air ducts to get into Kleiner’s office whenever he got himself locked out, among others.

  • Adrian Shepard is “mysteriously” bumped up to the advanced training list. This is also the point in time when G-man visits the Marine Boot Camp.

May 16Edit

07:30
08:30
  • Several system crashes occur around Black Mesa (the security guard in the Sector C lobby states he has had a system crash “about 20 minutes ago”).[16]
8:42
  • Barney Calhoun starts his tram ride from the Area 8 Topside Dormitories at Black Mesa,[18] to start his second day at Area 3 Medium Security Facilities in Sector C.[17] He arrives there as soon as Gordon Freeman begins his tram ride, at 8:47.

Remainder of the day
  • Freeman, Calhoun, Green and Cross fight their way through the facility.
  • Overnight, Freeman successfully launches the rocket.
  • Adrian Shephard and his squad are attacked by Alien Aircraft and their Osprey crashes.
19:00
  • As heard during the tram ride at the start of Half-Life, the Black Mesa Hazard Course Decathlon was to start in the Level 3 facility.[16] This never happened due to the incident.

May 17Edit

  • Early in the morning, Gina Cross and Colette Green are able to perform a resonance reversal. Their fate, along with Keller’s, are unknown.[19]
  • Barney Calhoun successfully escapes Black Mesa with Rosenberg, Simmons and Walter Bennet.
  • As Gordon Freeman fights his way across the surface towards the Lambda Complex, Shephard is left behind (this matches the message addressed to Cooper). Race X creatures appear sometime later.
  • Freeman defeats the Nihilanth and frees the Vortigaunts. He is then placed in stasis by the G-Man.
  • Black Mesa is destroyed by an atomic bomb. Shephard is also placed in stasis by the G-Man.
  • As the Black Mesa facility is destroyed, GLaDOS’s race against Black Mesa is stopped.[2]

May 18Edit

08:00
  • Colette Green was to conduct a Public Relations Tour.[15] This never happened due to the incident.
16:30
  • Otis Laurey was to be instructed by the Miller’s holographic instructor counterpart for a Security Guard Training, but he apparently postponed and Cross suggests to Green to ask Barney to replace him.[15] This never happened due to the incident.

August 15Edit

  • Barney Calhoun’s Blue Shift was to end on that day.[17] It ended earlier due to the incident.

After May 200-Edit

BME newspaper clips
Newsclips of that period seen in Black Mesa East.

Main article: Seven Hour War

  • During this period of almost 20 years Gordon Freeman is in stasis.[20] It starts at the aftermath of the Black Mesa Incident in May 200- and ends at Gordon’s arrival in City 17 in 202-.
  • Portal Storms rage on Earth while Xen creatures continue to be teleported. The governments and United Nations provide the protection centers located in major cities worldwide.
  • The Aperture Laboratories are in a lockdown, with employees still trapped inside. The number of Aperture Science employees also likely diminishes, until there are only a few of them left.
  • The Combine launches an assault on Earth. Earth governments and the United Nations enter into war against them. The Seven Hour War occurs. Finally, Earth surrenders to the Combine and Wallace Breen, former Black Mesa Administrator, is appointed Earth Administrator. Meanwhile, the Combine activate a suppression field that prevents child birth.

Around 2010[21]Edit

Main article: Portal

  • This is the period during which Portal is set. It occurs a short amount of time after the Combine invasion of Earth.[22][23]
  • In the Aperture Science computer-aided Enrichment CenterChell is awoken by GLaDOS who makes her perform seemingly routine tests. However Chell soon learns that the Aperture employees are long dead or escaped, and that GLaDOS is seemingly the only being left in the decaying facility. After much promise of cake at the test’s conclusion, Chell is met with an incinerator, which she narrowly escapes, and works her way through the maintenance areas, despite GLaDOS’s protests. Eventually, Chell finds GLaDOS’s control room, and manages to escape death by neurotoxin by detaching the GLaDOS’s Personality Cores, and partially destroying her as a result. Chell is forced to the surface by GLaDOS’s explosion, only to be dragged away from freedom and back into the facility by the Party Escort Bot. Unknown to Chell however, GLaDOS is still alive.
  • Doug Rattmann, being the one of the last Aperture employees alive, witnesses GLaDOS’ destruction. After the Party Escort Bot drags Chell back into the facility, Rattmann feels guilty for Chell’s situation and reenters the facility to help her.
  • At an unknown time before Gordon Freeman‘s awakening, Isaac Kleiner and Eli Vance each build in their respective labs a teleport not needing a Xen relay with the aid of Alyx Vance and Judith Mossman, among others. When tested on a cat, it kills it, traumatizing Barney Calhoun in the process. They then continue working on it until Freeman’s arrival.

Between 2014 and 2028Edit

  • This is the last time Alyx Vance drives Highway 17, as said by her in the radio transmission at Shorepoint Base.
  • The events of Half-Life: Alyx may take place around this time, being confirmed several times through the trailer and the Valve team itself. The game is set to occur between the events of both flagship Half-Life games, and follow the exploits of Alyx Vance herself before she meets Gordon.

Day 1 of Gordon’s journeyEdit

  • Under two decades after the Black Mesa Incident,[20] Gordon Freeman is awakened by the G-Man after a long period of stasis, he is placed on a train entering the City 17 Trainstation.
  • Barney prevents Gordon from entering a prisoner train and reintroduces both himself and Dr. Kleiner to Gordon.
  • Breen’s speech on instinct occurs at this time.
  • Gordon explores City 17. During the exploration, he is ambushed by several Civil Protection units for entering a residential building. Gordon is saved by Alyx, who brings him to Kleiner’s Lab.
  • Alyx is teleported to Black Mesa East, but a teleporter accident causes Lamarr to be sent to the Wasteland and Gordon to ultimately be teleported a short distance outside the lab.
  • The teleporter accident causes the Combine to send CP officers to kill Gordon.
  • Gordon leaves City 17 with an airboat, and the Underground Railroad is dismantled by Civil Protection. Station 6 and 7 are destroyed by Headcrab Shells.
  • Gordon attacks the APC garage and Gate 5, killing all Combine forces within. Breen’s speech on Gordon Freeman occurs as Gordon raids the APC garage.
  • Gordon destroys a Hunter-Chopper shortly before entering Black Mesa East.
  • As Gordon enters Black Mesa East, he disembarks the airboat and meets Judith Mossman.
  • Gordon is given the Gravity Gun by Alyx.
  • Combine forces led by Breen raid Black Mesa East while Alyx, Dog, and Gordon are in the nearby scrapyard. Gordon escapes the raid and enters the nearby town of Ravenholm. Eli is captured and taken to Nova Prospekt. Judith Mossman is also taken however has not been captured by the Combine. Dog and Alyx also escape the raid.
  • Gordon meets Grigori, Ravenholm’s priest. Gordon uses Grigori’s traps to explore the town.

Day 2 of Gordon’s journeyEdit

  • Grigori helps Gordon escape Ravenholm.
  • After navigating an underground mine, Gordon fights several Overwatch soldiers attacking Shorepoint Base.
  • Alyx tells Gordon that Eli has been captured, and that she will infiltrate Nova Prospekt by train.
  • Gordon leaves Shorepoint Base with the Scout Car.
  • By this time Dock 137 and Bridge Point have been occupied by the Combine. The Combine has also taken a Petroleum Station on the Coast.
  • Gordon visits New Little Odessa. He helps Colonel Odessa Cubbage destroy a Combine Gunship while the Colonel contacts Lighthouse Point. After successfully destroying the gunship, Gordon continues his journey to Nova Prospekt.
  • Gordon clears out the Combine presence at Dock 137, the Petroleum Station, and Bridge Point.
  • Gordon reaches Lighthouse Point, where he helps the Resistance members there repel a Combine attack. Shortly after leaving on foot, Lighthouse Point is again attacked by Combine. The Scout Car is captured, and the base is presumably occupied by the Combine.
  • After traversing the Antlion territory and killing an Antlion Guard, Gordon receives Pheropods and enters the Vortigaunt Camp. After a brief tutorial on pheropod use, Gordon leaves the camp to Nova Prospekt.
  • Gordon uses antlions to attack the Combine in the prison. Breen gives another speech specific to Overwatch soldiers, expressing the advisors’ disappointment in their failure to stop Gordon.

Day 3 of Gordon’s journeyEdit

  • Gordon meets Alyx in the Depot. The two send Eli to the transportation room and uncover Mossman’s cooperation with the Combine.
  • Mossman and Eli leave Nova Prospekt to the Citadel with the Combine teleporter.
  • Alyx and Gordon leave Nova Prospekt in the Combine teleporter, destroying Nova Prospekt in the process.
  • After using the Nova Prospekt teleporter, it takes Gordon and Alyx a week to arrive to Kleiner’s teleporter; however, from their perspective it was only a few seconds. During this week the following events take place.
    • Lamarr is recovered and returned to Dr. Kleiner.
    • The original door to Kleiner’s lab is replaced with a much larger door.
    • Dog enters and stays inside Kleiner’s lab.
    • The Uprising of City 17 begins due to the destruction of Nova Prospekt. City 17 citizens are given guns and medical equipment by Resistance members outside the city.
    • Headcrab shelling causes many areas of City 17 to be infested by Xenian fauna.
    • The City 17 Trainstation is decommissioned and a barrier is placed in front of the entrance.
  • Alyx and Gordon reappear in Kleiner’s Lab and are briefed by Dr. Kleiner on current events.
  • Gordon and Dog leave to find Barney.
  • Breen’s speech on collaboration occurs.

  • Breen uses his Breencasts to directly speak with Gordon.
  • The suppression device within the Nexus is destroyed, causing the Nexus to be occupied by resistance forces.
  • Several Striders are dispatched to retake the Nexus, and attack the occupying Resistance forces.
  • Gordon evades and destroys the striders surrounding the Citadel, and is given access to the Citadel itself by Dog.
  • Gordon enters the Citadel and loses all his weapons except the Gravity Gun. The Gravity Gun becomes significantly more powerful, allowing Gordon to continue within the Citadel.
  • Gordon is briefly captured; he, Eli and Alyx are freed by Mossman after a conversation with Breen.
  • Gordon and Alyx prevent Breen from escaping by destroying the Dark Fusion Reactor, causing a massive explosion at the top of the Citadel.
  • Gordon is taken into stasis by the G-Man.

Day 4 of Gordon’s journeyEdit

  • The vortigaunts remove Gordon from stasis and place him “a few days” later at the base of the Citadel.[24] During his absence the following events take place.
    • The vortigaunts remove Alyx from the Citadel’s Dark Fusion Reactor explosion.
    • Mossman leaves for a Resistance base in the polar regions.
    • Mossman reports that she has discovered the Borealis. The Combine attack her Resistance base during the report.
    • Alyx searches for Gordon in City 17’s rubble.
    • The Combine stores Mossman’s report in the Citadel.
  • Alyx and Dog discover Gordon at the base of the Citadel. They are told by Eli and Kleiner that the Citadel Core is extremely unstable.
  • Alyx and Gordon stabilize the Citadel Core and leave in a stalker train.
  • The train is derailed, and both Gordon and Alyx are knocked unconscious.
  • City 17’s defenses against antlions and Xenian life fail by this time.
  • Gordon and Alyx fight through an underground parking lot and escape to the surface.

Pre-Portal 2Edit

  • GLaDOS’ partial destruction is followed by a period of inactivity within the Aperture Laboratories, during which time maintenance systems and Personality Cores maintain their functions. The facility remains in disarray, having become overgrown and dilapidated.[8] Pre-recorded ‘Emergency Test Protocols’ can oversee test chambers in times of cataclysmic system failure, “able to sustain themselves on a minimum 1.1 Volts”. Chell spends this time in stasis until the events of Portal 2. For at least some of her stasis, Chell is under supervision by a remaining Aperture employee, Doug Rattmann.

Portal 2Edit

Chell facing glados concept
Chell facing GLaDOS in the ruins of the Enrichment Center.

Main article: Portal 2

  • Chell is reawakened by Wheatley, a personality core. Wheatley insists he can secure an escape route out of the dilapidated Aperture Laboratories, which instead results in the inadvertent reactivation of GLaDOS.[8] As the story progresses, GLaDOS repairs most of the facility as evidenced by the steadily improving conditions of the testing courses that Chell is forced to complete.
  • Wheatley rescues Chell from the testing courses and helps her to GLaDOS’s control room, sabotaging GLaDOS’s defenses along the way.
  • GLaDOS’s begins the Aperture Science Cooperative Testing Initiative.
  • After an extremely brief confrontation, Wheatley, with Chell’s help, is placed in control of the Aperture Science facilities. He immediately becomes mad with power and proceeds to integrate GLaDOS’s core with a potato battery. Lashing out, he sends Chell and GLaDOS’s potato down an elevator shaft several kilometers deep.
  • Chell survives the fall because of her Long Fall Boots and GLaDOS survives because of her happenstantial situation as a potato; she is, however, carried off by a crow at this point. Chell now finds herself traversing a series of old condemned Enrichment Spheres, the precursor to the testing rooms that GLaDOS employs in the new Aperture facilities. The first of these spheres were built at the time of Aperture Science’s foundation, earlier than June 15, 1961, at which time Aperture Laboratories was under the direction of Cave Johnson. They continued to be used at least until Johnson’s death by poisonous moon-rock some time in the late 1980s.
  • Chell eventually finds GLaDOS, makes her way back to the facilities controlled by Wheatley, and finds that Wheatley has managed to inadvertently demolish massive portions of the facility. Signs of the extent of the facility’s degeneration include the announcer which directed Chell’s testing before GLaDOS’s reactivation repeatedly interrupting Wheatley with warnings of the facility’s imminent destruction. Eventually, Chell manages to make her way back to Wheatley’s “lair” and after a relatively brief battle, puts GLaDOS back in charge. As a token of appreciation (or perhaps of resignation), GLaDOS allows Chell to leave Aperture Science, and sends her back to the surface. The game ends with the player viewing a seemingly endless field of grain, before the view is interrupted by the Companion Cube from the first Portal game being sent up after Chell.
  • Because the exact amount of time that passed between Portal and Portal 2 is unknown, it is also unknown whether the Combine is still in control of Earth, or what became of Chell following her escape from Aperture Laboratories.

Hazard Course (optional)

“Hello, and welcome to the Black Mesa Hazard Course“―Holographic Assistant[src]

The Training Facility at Black Mesa houses the Hazard Course to help users of the HEV Suit hone their skills at jumping, crouching, and combinations of both movements in an environment as well as to give them basic instructions on how to operate guns and interact with the rest of the equipment.Start of the Hazard Course, with the Holographic Assistant waiting. The HEV Suit at the start of the course. The assistant introduces Gordon to the Crowbar. The assistant introduces Gordon to the Long Jump Module. The assistant introduces Gordon to the Health Charger. The assistant introduces Gordon to the Suit Charger. The Target Range section of the course.Gordon exits the course by the Tram at the end.

Chapter 1: Black Mesa Inbound

“This train is inbound from Level 3 Dormitories to Sector C Test Labs and Control Facilities“―Black Mesa Announcement System[src]

Gordon Freeman rides the tram to his underground lab at 8:47 AM and passes Barney Calhoun, seen bashing on a locked door as Gordon continues his trip. The public announcement system announces the most recent news, making ironic comments about healthcare measures on radiation and urinalysis tests, as large pools of radioactive waste pass beneath him.

Doors open and close as he goes slowly underground to the test chamber. From the windows, Gordon can see nuclear missiles ready for transport to launch sites, robots nearly crashing into the tram, and the intricate workings of the Black Mesa Research Facility revealing themselves as being fragile, and more often than not, broken.

At a Loader crossing, the tram is stopped, and on the left, the G-Man is as well in a tram. Eventually, Freeman’s tram reaches its destination, and after stepping out onto the catwalk, Gordon’s day begins.Gordon rides the tram into Black Mesa, passing Barney Calhoun along the way.

Chapter 2: Anomalous Materials

“They’re waiting for you Gordon… in the Test Chamber“―A scientist reminds Gordon of his duty[src]

Arriving at the Anomalous Materials Laboratory, his usual place of work, Gordon dons his HEV Suit. Continuing down to the lab, Gordon finds himself face to face with the people conducting his test; they inform him that they have a unique and large sample of a classified origin and that they will be deviating from normal procedure to accommodate for this.

Once in the test chamber, he goes to the control panel and presses the button to start the rotors on the Anti-Mass Spectrometer. Rising up from the delivery system, the sample arrives. “Standard procedure for a non-standard specimen,” they assure him from above. “Go ahead, Gordon.” Gordon proceeds to push the cart into the beam.

The scientists begin to tell him to stop the Anti-Mass Spectrometer, but he is unable to hear them. Everything goes black. All that can be heard is the sound of his heavy breathing. Another flash of green, and he’s on a strange alien world. Just within the pool of green light around him, odd-looking bipedal lifeforms stare at him, as if confused. Another flash of green and he’s back in the destroyed test chamber.The Anti-Mass Spectrometer shortly before the Resonance Cascade.

Chapter 3: Unforeseen Consequences

 “Prepare for unforeseen consequences.“―G-Man[src]

Black Mesa has received massive structural damage, and to make matters worse, aliens from Xen begin to flood into the facility. After being told that all phones are out, Gordon is requested by his colleague Eli Vance to try to make it to the surface in order to acquire help.

Gordon finds a crowbar to help him get past obstacles. Since the tram is too damaged to work, he must cross Sector B’s Coolant Reserve Facility in order to find a way out.

Gordon occasionally witnesses G-Man watching him from out-of-reach places, always walking off before Gordon can get to him.Headcrab in the Ionization Chambers room after the Resonance Cascade.

Chapter 4: Office Complex

“Hey! What the hell are you doing down here? Get topside! I heard there are troops coming in to save us.“―A security guard[src]

Gordon reaches the office complex, where several scientists and security guards are barricaded into their rooms, hiding from the Xen creatures that keep coming. He hears from the personnel that the military have arrived to rescue the people trapped in the facility. Two Headcrabs approach Gordon.

Chapter 5: “We’ve Got Hostiles”

 “We’ve got hostiles!“―HECU Marine[src]

Gordon begins making good progress, passing through various storage and staging areas, continuing his hunt for a way to the surface. Gordon learns that the soldiers coming on a rescue mission have already arrived. He attempts to join up with them but walks into a room and witnesses a Marine killing a scientist. It is then that he discovers that the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit (HECU), which has taken control of Black Mesa, is not just killing the aliens, but is targeting everyone connected to the project to keep a media circus from beginning.

When he eventually reaches the surface, Gordon finds the facility under total control of the military and, worse, in the middle of an artillery bombardment. Taking cover, he is forced back into the underground complex. However, it is stated by a scientist that the surviving members of the Lambda Team (in the Lambda Complex at the other end of the facility) may be able to close the dimensional rift. Therefore, Gordon begins the journey across Black Mesa to reach them.Gordon engages the HECU in combat.

Chapter 6: Blast Pit

Gordon enters an abandoned, largely sealed-off area of Black Mesa dating back to its earlier days as a missile complex, full of mothballed machinery and now used as a dumping ground for toxic waste from the rest of the facility, where the HECU soldiers have yet to get a good foothold because of the overwhelming amount of aliens and toxic waste in the area.

Arriving at a rocket engine test silo, Gordon discovers the Tentacle. After reactivating the fuel, power, and oxygen lines, Gordon is able to kill it by using the rocket engine to incinerate it and finds a way out through the meters-long dirt tunnel dug by the Tentacle.Tentacles in the blast pit.

Chapter 7: Power Up

Trying to reach the surface once more, Gordon’s progress is thwarted by a Gargantua in the Sector E Materials Transport. He then learns from a dying security guard that if he restores the generator, he can ride the tram to the surface.

Freeman enters the Houndeye infested subterranean areas and activates the generator, restoring power to sector E; after activating more switches, he destroys the Gargantua patrolling the area by turning on the transformers supplying the rail system with power. It is also possible to kill the Gargantua using an excessive amount of explosives.

Jumping onto a tram, he is able to continue his way by smashing through the concrete barricade blocking the access to the rail system. Two HECU soldiers fighting the Gargantua.

Chapter 8: On A Rail

As Gordon rides the tram into the Materials Transport section of Black Mesa, he learns from a security guard that he must ride to the High Altitude Launch Center to launch a satellite, which the Lambda Team can use to reverse the effects of the Resonance Cascade.

Freeman also discovers the HECU’s true hatred for him, as well as their larger reinforcements: sandbag bunkers with rapid-fire sniper rifles, mounted machine gun turrets (manual and automated), and even mounted rocket launchers.

After going round in circles for a while, Gordon goes up several elevators and at last reaches the surface again near the launch site; he sends the rocket up into orbit and goes back underground. The rocket pit.

Chapter 9: Apprehension

Continuing towards the surface, Gordon encounters a terrifying new aquatic Xen creature, the Ichthyosaur, and acquires a deadly new weapon to fight it. After an underwater battle with an Ichthyosaur, he manages to escape and get back on his way.

After battling with the Black Ops, another military crew trying to eliminate even the HECU, Freeman is captured by two HECU soldiers. Instead of taking him in for questioning, out of spite, they remove all of his weapons and drop him in a trash compactor.Gordon under attack by a Vortigaunt.

Chapter 10: Residue Processing

After escaping from the trash compactor and getting back to the surface, Gordon stumbles towards a mostly abandoned part of the facility, meant for processing and disposing of waste and hazardous materials.

Dodging and jumping through antiquated compaction machines, large vats of waste, and slipping through furnaces, as well as riding on gravity-defying conveyor belts, Freeman leaves this part of the facility.Gordon continues to fight his way through and outside the facility. One of the several hazardous material tanks to come across.

Chapter 11: Questionable Ethics

Gordon eventually winds up in a secret part of the facility where he discovers that scientists had been “collecting” specimens from Xen since long before the incident occurred.

Inside, Freeman continues to rearm himself to rejoin the battle against the HECU. He also meets the alien military units, the Alien Grunts; and finds one of the most powerful weapons in the facility, the Tau Cannon. Soon, he heads outside to search for the Lambda Complex.Gordon Freeman facing several Houndeyes.

Chapter 12: Surface Tension

Gordon again reaches the surface, which is now a war zone. The Vortigaunts, along with Alien Grunts and Gargantuas, have begun making determined attacks against the Marines, and the tide of the battle is beginning to turn in favor of the aliens; the Marines call in reinforcements, but it is not enough. Gordon must scale cliffs and navigate the bombed out buildings while avoiding both sides.

Many skirmishes are seen between the HECU and the Xen forces. Finally, Gordon reaches relative safety underground.View of the canyon from the cliff where a HECU soldier is waiting for Freeman.

Chapter 13: “Forget About Freeman!”

“Forget about Freeman! We’re abandoning the base! If you have any last bomb targets, mark them on the Tactical Map, otherwise, get the hell out of there!“―HECU commander[src]

The HECU determines that they are fighting a battle they cannot win against the Xen aliens. With this, as well as having continually failed to neutralize Freeman, they abandon their mission and begin to evacuate the facility, calling in air strikes and heavy artillery to cover their retreat.

Gordon enters an underground storage garage to avoid the bombardments, and eventually fights his way through scores of aliens and several groups of the decimated HECU forces before reaching the Lambda Complex.Gordon destroys a tank.

Chapter 14: Lambda Core

After much struggle, Gordon finally reaches the Lambda Complex, which he discovers to be the place where Black Mesa developed the teleportation technology that allowed scientists to travel to Xen in the first place.

The handful of surviving personnel, who have held themselves up in a small stronghold, inform Gordon that, the satellite he launched earlier was not able to reverse the effects of the Resonance Cascade because an immensely powerful being on the other side is keeping the rift between the worlds open, and Gordon must go to Xen to kill it and prevent the aliens from taking over completely.

Before being teleported to Xen, Gordon gains access to an arsenal, health and HEV-charge caches, and is finally given the Long Jump Module. After an attempted interception by Alien Controllers, the scientists open a portal and Gordon jumps in.The player’s first interaction with the newly developed portal technology. The teleport chamber in the Lambda Complex.

Chapter 15: Xen

Once in the border world of XenGordon encounters many of the aliens that had been teleported into Black Mesa in their natural habitats, as well as the remains of some HEV-wearing researchers who came before him. In order to progress, he needs to re-activate a portal inside one of the floating islands to venture more of Xen’s perimeters.Gordon finally reaches Xen.

Chapter 16: Gonarch’s Lair

Freeman is made to face one of the Nihilanth‘s most powerful minions; the Gonarch, found in its lair, located in another floating island. Gordon is able to kill it and use the portal created after its death to continue.Gordon Freeman faces the Gonarch.

Chapter 17: Interloper

Gordon’s journey across Xen continues, but his supplies are running short, spent on destroying the Gonarch. He is teleported to an Alien Grunt cloning facility, where the army of Xen is created. There, Gordon finds a group of docile Vortigaunts working, before exiting the facility and getting ready to enter one last teleporter.First view of the Alien Grunt cloning facility.

Chapter 18: Nihilanth

“Win, you cannot win.“―The Nihilanth taunts Gordon[src]

In a vast cave, Gordon finally confronts the powerful and mysterious being that is holding the portal open, the Nihilanth. Gordon destroys its healing system, allowing him to destroy its vulnerable brain. As the creature dies, it floats toward the ceiling, emanating portals, and finally exploding in a giant green blast that overpowers Gordon’s senses. One of the areas the Nihilanth sends Gordon.Nihilanth regaining its strength from a Xen crystal.

Endgame

 “Time to choose.“―The G-Man[src]

When Gordon comes to his senses, he finds himself in front of the G-Man. Both are transported to various locales around Xen, while the G-Man praises Gordon’s actions in the border world, to later explain that his “employers” have agreed that Gordon has “limitless potential,” and have authorized him to offer Freeman a job.

The G-Man and Gordon are teleported a last time to a tram car, flying through space at immense speed. By stepping into a portal, and knowing that his only other choice is a battle he has no chance of winning, Gordon accepts the G-Man’s offer.

Finding himself floating in nothingness, he hears the G-Man’s voice one last time; “Wisely done, Mr. Freeman, I will see you up ahead…The G-Man talking to Gordon Freeman on Xen, with Boids in the back.

It is unknown if it was issued each year.[5]

1985

1986

  • The Conversion Gel Testing Facility is updated with an additional wall.
  • Word reaches Aperture Science management that Black Mesa is working on a similar portal technology. In response to this news, Aperture Science begins developing GLaDOS, although the name was already in use in 1982. GLaDOS V.1 is activated, and (for the first time) attempts to kill all the staff of the Aperture Science. [2]

1987

  • This is the most recent date for the Aperture Image Format. At that time, it is maintained by Doug Rattmann.[4]

Sometime in this time period, Cave Johnson dies of moon-rock poisoning. It is unspecified when exactly it happened. The Borealis is claimed lost at sea.

1990s

  • Judging from Chell‘s handwriting and spelling skills,[6] she is under the age of ten, meaning that the Aperture Science Bring Your Daughter to Work Day event occurs sometime early in this decade, and ends in an unspecified disaster.[7]

1996

  • The Aperture Science Red Phone plan is implemented in case GLaDOS appears to become sentient and godlike, requiring an employee to sit by a red phone on a desk in GLaDOS chamber’s entrance hall.[8]

1997

  • At this time, GLaDOS’s version is 3.11. This is also the latest known date of Aperture Science using a bulletin board system.[4]

1998

2000s

  • On an unknown time before GLaDOS’ activation, Chell applies to work on Aperture Science as a test subject, but is rejected.[12]

Blue Marble calendar 2

The December calendar.

  • This is the “year” during which the Black Mesa Incident occurs. Deliberately kept vague by the Half-Life team,[13] it could be any date from 2000 to 2009.

  • While “200-” could refer to any date from 2000 to 2009, a note by series’ writer Marc Laidlaw seen in Raising the Bar features “March 31, 2003”, and a time, “4:33 p.m.”.[14] Although it has not been confirmed by Valve, it is possible that the Half-Life events originally were to start on March 31, 2003.
However Marc Laidlaw dismissed “1998” as the date for the Black Mesa Incident, as the date “200-” given when the first Half-Life was released is the only correct one.[13] It is unknown why Erik Wolpaw made that mistake, and if it was intended or not. For convenience and consistency, that “1998” will always be replaced by “200-” on the wiki, even with the dates pertaining to Aperture Science.

Several days before May 16

  • GLaDOS is activated as one of the planned activities on Aperture’s Bring-Your-Daughter-to-Work Day. Upon being activated, she becomes self-aware and goes rogue, taking control of Aperture Laboratories, and killing the Enrichment staff personnel through the release of a deadly neurotoxin.

May 3

  • From Shephard’s diary entries (originally March; see above): “Another typically hellish day at base camp… I’ll be glad when this is over and I can finally can get assigned a mission. There has been this really weird civie spotted at the base. Rumor is he’s from some government branch looking to recruit; others say he’s with some secret research group. I would jump at the chance to join. It would be cool just for the change and the adventure.”[15]

I wonder what he’s up to…”[15]

May 9

  • From Shephard’s diary entries (originally March; see above): “For weeks our drills have been the same crap day after day. Today we assemble for the morning run and our drill instructor tells us we have one week to become experts at indoor strategic combat. We will be spending every day this week at the combat simulation facility. As far as I know this a specialized training not taught in boot camp. What I want to know is if this is to test our ability to adapt or if we are being readied for a specific mission? Time will tell…”[15]
  • Barney Calhoun receives a letter from L.M. about his May 15 reassignment to Blue Shift.[18]

May 11

  • Colette Green receives a letter from the Black Mesa Office of the Administrator’s LM saying that sample GG-3883 will replace sample EP-0021.[16]

Before May 12

  • Barney Calhoun is performing a retinal scan and has his salary increased. His two-day Security Guard Training is scheduled.[18]

May 12

  • From Shephard’s diary entries (originally March; see above): “The rumors have been flying since our indoor combat training began. Most of my peers are convinced that we are being primed for a mission. No one can agree on what the mission is. I have heard the name Black Mesa Facility thrown around a lot, but I have no information about the place. The rumors are that some top-secret research is going on there. Doesn’t sound too exciting to me…”[15]

Other unknown security guards are assigned to Red, Orange, Yellow, Green and Indigo Shifts in specific areas of Sector A, B, and C. For that timespan, the Violet Shift is on standby.[18]
I’d rather hold out for something with more likelihood of combat.”[15]
  • In the Half-Life:Blue Shift on start of the railway is shown that Gordon Freeman was already working at Level 3 Security, as he gets in train at Level 3 platform. [16] Then it was retconned in Half-Life 2 and its episodes, where it is implied that Gordon was already working for some time at Black Mesa before the incident: Barney tells Gordon he owes him a beer and reminds him who he is when first meeting in the City 17 Trainstation, and Alyx tells in the City 17 Underground that Gordon and Barney would compete in air ducts to get into Kleiner’s office whenever he got himself locked out, among others.

Pre-Portal 2

  • GLaDOS’ partial destruction is followed by a period of inactivity within the Aperture Laboratories, during which time maintenance systems and Personality Cores maintain their functions. The facility remains in disarray, having become overgrown and dilapidated.[9] Pre-recorded ‘Emergency Test Protocols’ can oversee test chambers in times of cataclysmic system failure, “able to sustain themselves on a minimum 1.1 Volts”. Chell spends this time in stasis until the events of Portal 2. For at least some of her stasis, Chell is under supervision by a remaining Aperture employee, Doug Rattmann.

Portal 2

Chell facing glados concept

Chell facing GLaDOS in the ruins of the Enrichment Center.

Main article: Portal 2

  • Chell is reawakened by Wheatley, a personality core. Wheatley insists he can secure an escape route out of the dilapidated Aperture Laboratories, which instead results in the inadvertent reactivation of GLaDOS.[9] As the story progresses, GLaDOS repairs most of the facility as evidenced by the steadily improving conditions of the testing courses that Chell is forced to complete.

Half-Life: Alyx uses realistic realness (VR) gameplay. Vic Toughie of TechRadar said: “This certainly isn’t the long-awaited Half-Life 3. Notwithstanding, it’s pleasant to see Valve people finished on a Half-Life program as the organization has run hot and unarmed on whether we would e’er see another accounting in the serial. But we forever springy in comedian for a Half-Life 3.”[24] Kevin Sociologist of Enterprise Insider wrote that Alyx could “face impudent touch in a business [VR] that has struggled to win over explicit gamers”.[25] Microsoft administrator Phil Philosopher said he played the brave antecedent to its annunciation, and that it was “impressive”.[26]

THE BLEEDING SKIES {ANNABEL: THE LUCID ARTIST} (SHORT STORY)

THE BLEEDING SKIES {ANNABEL: THE LUCID ARTIST} (SHORT STORY)

'Our world is a fraud, and so too is your own.'

Our world is a fraud, and so too is your own.

Annabel awoke. Now, where was she this time? Crimson skies and rivers of flowing blood, streaming in ‘pulse-like’ ripples. ‘Not too bad,’ she thought. Definitely an improvement. The customer would surely be pleased with the progress she was making.  ’This would set the perfect scene for a horrid nightmare,’ she thought to herself, feeling the chills of excitement rush through her. After all, she was payed on commission  not Salary. It’s a hard run for struggling artists. Annabel is in the business of nightmare manufacturing. She was the highest scoring student in her field, majoring in ‘Lucid Artistry.’  She graduated in the spring of 3010. If you could call it ‘spring.’ After the nuclear war in the midst of 2080, the world, as we know it, was changed forever. Only a perpetually radio-active world remains ‘out-doors’ and such a phrase no-longer exists in the English dictionary, rather in folk-tales told on ‘story’ servers. Skipping through her newly imagined horror-world, Annabel grinned, she felt so happy, it had been a tough road for her. With the death of her mother and her struggle to reach the standard her employers required, but some-how she made it through. It was as if she was never truly alone.

” Dear Vice Chairman and members of PrevenCorp, I Annabel Toohum, present to you my latest work, ‘The Bleeding Skies!” Annabel exclaimed, closing her eyes  and raising up both her arms as if channeling some sort of energy. The conference room was transformed into a hellish landscape. Fire poured from the skies, blood rivers pulsated and wales and moans could be heard in the distance.  Loud applause followed.” This is perfect Anna!” Pronounced the Vice Chancellor. PrevenCorp was the worlds most well renowned anti-promotional advertisement company. This fact was well known to it’s competitors and largely un-heard of too it’s consumers. They intended to keep it that way. PrevenCorp specialises in the manufacturing of horrible nightmare sequences which are diffused into the minds of fellow citizens as they dream. Companies pay top dollar for their competitors brands to be featured in the nightmares, thus creating synaptic link between horrific-events and specific products. Annabel was PrevenCorp’s newest and brightest intern. The way things were going, she had a bright future there.

Stanley spent a good deal of time writing out his discoveries in a small tablet. ‘There are two levels of the artificial world.’ he wrote,’ The first level is ‘conscious’ in the sense that this is the digital ‘life-simulation.’ The second, is the dream and lucid dream world. Physically, residents are always below the ‘real’ conscious level and because of this, they are able to tap into the dream work more readily. Skilled dream-artists seem to be able to tap into this world while awake in the virtual world, transporting  themselves, along with others, into imagined worlds for short periods of time.’ He thought of Annabel, ‘ accomplished Lucid-Artists seem to have the ability to travel beyond both worlds, delivering data directly into the system mainframe. This means that dreams, nightmares and imaginings can be transmitted..’

Stanley looked down into his console,as he had done for the past 78 hours , 45 minutes and 13 seconds. His shift ended at 100 hours. He would then be entitled to a 42 minute nap and the procedure would start over. ‘Operators,’ as they were called are born outside of the machine. Only one human in ever ten-thousand born, would be born and nurtured outside of the console by a virtual surrogate. They are the protectors of human well-fare inside the virtual reality. Stanley is certainly not the worlds only Operator, although he lives in isolation. Operators watch over different colonies of people and are separate by vast areas of atomic wasteland, never to leave their own station. They themselves know little of why they were chosen, if not by random, or who created the systems of their world. They only know one thin. Their Job. Stanley sits in silence. He is continually viewing a single pod, a young lady over and over again. Making sure her Oxygen levels are perfect. Making sure her nutrition intake is impeccable and even adding chemical supplements to her blood stream when she if feeling down and out.

Stanley knew all of his 60,000 residents by first name, he knew each of their food preferences, he knows their fears and aspirations. He could read them like an open book. But she was different, Annabel. Stanley thought in silence, ‘she has never truly awoken, but what is it to be alive and awake? She feels, or at least thinks she does. She sees, smells and tastes her world. Perhaps she is more alive than I?’ So many questions he may never know the answer to. Stanley was working on correcting system code. Eliminating the ‘dejavu’ glitch and correcting gravitational pull around the bermuda triangle. He sat back and took a breathe. It was break time at last! chowing down on a vitamin paste, the Operator rushed to down his sleep-syrum and hit the sack.

***

Paris. The cars looked so strange, so foreign, yet strangely familiar. So much busyness, people! Everywhere. The Eiffel tower, on the second floor, the Man looked out into the open-free world, he was with people. But he couldn’t remember who they were, but they brought to him a feeling he had never felt in his conscious life. Ecstasy filled Stanley’s very bones. Then, he froze. He saw her hair rustling in the breeze, “Annabel?” he called out. No response. “Annabel dear, stop playing these games, come over here I have something for you!” These words were not his own, he felt like an observer in someone else’s body. He felt around in his pocket and could make out a small box shaped object. The  young beauty walked with a skip in her step, Stanley caught up. Placing his hand on Annnabel’s shoulder he turned her to face him. A horrifically bloody screaming face met his as the happy world fell to ashes. Stanley Awoke.

JACK DANIELS AND 8 MILES –(A TRUE STORY)

JACK DANIELS AND 8 MILES –(A TRUE STORY)

Magic Rug!

Me, in the ambulance jacket, lying on ‘magic rug’!

It started out as a quite night, just two mates and a bottle of jack somehow stranded at a park. My phone dead and nothing planned, two reckless teens refuting the system and negating institutionalised party systems. We set to the streets for a night that we knew we would remember for the rest of our days. Late night philosophy and bonding, that night two bros ventured through the most derelict suburbs of Perth and emerged as men.

“Nolan, Jeremiah Nolan!” there was no reply, yep we were stranded. What the hell happened? We weren’t entirely sure, waking up approximately fourteen kilometres from where we had begun (8.6) miles (according to Google maps), sleeping in a house rug on the beach. Our friend, whom which we counted on in these sorts of pickles was un-contactable in our one true time of need. Moving our positions and leaving our rug behind, we hobbled to Mindarie quay and collapsed outside ‘The boat’ bar/pub exhausted, early morning before it had opened. A passing man with a small dog grinned at us, “caugh! You got the right idea mate!” At this point, we lost it. We were certain that he had telepathically seen our night/morning of adventure and approved.

***

“shit, shit zone hot!”, we had sighted police. My mate and I ran for cover off the main road (god knows where) cowering in the darkest corner behind a bridge. This was a first person co-op adventure and we were the stars. We rationed and were very careful with our dosage of ‘fuel’. Too much under and this shit would get too real too quickly, too much over and we wouldn’t be going too far. This was a serious situation. After re-fuelling and waiting for the heat to cool off, we set off running into the side streets of Clarkson— “Clarkson station??!” How did we end up here? Both of us were baffled at the mileage we had already travelled.

On our walk we passed a peculiar house… this house had three different coloured dog bowls sitting affront. “hold the fence open”, my mate whispered to me, I did as requested, ‘awe man be careful, hurry up common!!” I replied anxiously. He entered the small front yard of the apartment looking house, carefully re-arranging the bowls colour order. “RUN RUN RUN!!!” he screamed as we both ran from the scene of the crime at full pelt, those people would be so pissed!!

Magic Rug

After venturing further through the darkness and unknown, running from shadows, running from shadows in the dark and performing brief workouts on crudely crafted public ‘striders’ and ‘peddle devices’, we came across some houses that must have been awaiting rubbish pickup.

“Hey, man, look at this!!” I shouted exuberantly, “keep it down man” my buddy countered, even louder. We were both gone. “aha! Check this out! Oh my god!!” It was an abandoned carpet rug! Such a treasure! I quickly snatched the corner of the rug and ran like hell.

In mid-flight, given my drunken state, I completely forgot that I was pulling the rug behind me.. “AHHHHHH AHHHHHHH AHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!” Screaming with horror at this mysterious carpet that was somehow chasing me, my mate was dying with laughter whilst trying to keep up with the absurdity and my lighting fast adrenaline-fuelled run. Later, we resolved the fact that I was not being perused.

Wrapping the rug and hoisting into unto our shoulders, we resolved that it would be a useful tool to combat the cold if we had to ‘close up shop’ for the night.

The Church & Supply drop

“A CHURCH!” Praise Jeremiah! Jeremiah the lord! At this moment we called our friend Jeremiah Nolan, who was typically our saviour in these situations. Calling him up, he responded, sounding very tired and nauseous. “ahhhhhh” is all I recall him moaning to us during the whole period. We mounted the stairs of the church, kneeling in front of the doors we gave our praise and gratitude to Nolan, begging for a supply drop. “Praise the Lord! Jeremiah!!” we called to the heavens, poor neighbours. Our friend soon hung-up and we continued the antics for some time after without realising our contact had been lost.

Leaving the church disheartened but still buzzing with alcohol induced excitement, we came across a rare treasure. “SUPPLY DROP! HE SENT US A SUPPLY DROP! PRAISE THE LORD!” A trolley! In the middle of know-where? It was a sign that we must pick up where our forefathers had left off. We were going to the beach.

We carefully placed magic rug into the wheeled cage beast. We took turns rolling the treasure, until, we came across the slopes of Mindarie. “Get in” my friend said to me, I quickly jumped in—and it was amazing! Rolling, watching the stars blur in my vision, feeling the wind in my face and the exhilaration. That night I felt what it was like to travel through time and space. We took turns at this and both had the time of our lives. Miraculously, we didn’t suffer any serious injuries.

Arriving at the beach we parked our beast just shy of the beach car-park, has a trolley ever been so far from home? I don’t know, in any case, it felt like a triumph. Finding a small quiet cove on the beach, we rolled out our enormous mite-infested rug and enjoyed the gentle sound of wave’s soothing us to sleep, along with a couple of drunk dials.

***

The world came to life the next day, people emerged from their homes and business and heat overcame the quay. After enjoying Dome breakfast and freaking out as we sat across the room from a pair of police officers (we still wonder to this day whether or not they were there on account of us), we came to the resolution that no one was coming to save us. It was up to us to save ourselves (insert inspirational quote about overcoming unbelievable odds here).

Wearing jeans and dressed for a club, we pick up all the stray supplies we could, lost sunnies and old hats we scrimmaged from the beach as we attempted to walk to the nearest appropriate bus stop (which was kilometers away). Dehydrated and after some walking, we stumbled over dunes and discovered an abandoned party area! It was filled with broken glass, old bottles and food scraps. Even a smashed computer! “What a disgrace!” we thought. How could anyone show that disrespect to a machine?

After some time and small talk about a “Sunday Sesh!” we comically repeated the phrase to each other in different accents. My favourite was a rich Canadian accent, the speech flowed magnificently “ITS SUNDAYYYY” I began, “WE’RE GONNNA HAVE A SESH”. This created hours of enjoyment on our journey back to the homestead. We didn’t care about the stares of small children, (understandable, we looked like drug addicts and sounded like lunatics) we were conquerors!

The close and the opening

One last bus ride home, sitting in the back after a light cafe meal (we scrimmaged together change) we sat exhausted, falling asleep. Enter unassuming pre-teen. The kid carried a skateboard in his right hand, we made the mistake of eye contact. Looking at us, his expression turned to one of disgust and hate as he aggressively threw his skateboard on the seat and angrily sat down. We found this hilarious and had no idea what had just happened. We made it to our respective homes at last, safe and sound. This was the end of one adventure, and the beginning of a legacy.

DARREL THE DISAPPOINTED PUG #4
'My grandfather and idol, Zeus Pugstein. He was blind in one eye and had no bladder control. Life of the party!.' - Darrel

‘My grandfather and idol, Zeus Pugstein. He was blind in one eye and had no bladder control. Life of the party!’ – Darrel

Tuesday.. I was desperate for a sleep in. Thankfully the sadists that I live with had early shifts and didn’t bother me. I slept till noon, marvelous! Rousing myself, I lazily waddled over to the kitchen on my cute little pug-stumps. I was famished and rather parched, all that sleeping was draining but it had put me in a better mood than usual. I gobbled down voluptuous quantities of ekaneuba and left over chicken scraps, apparently i wasn’t good enough for first-hand delicacies. I guess even if my meal was tainted with human saliva, it was better than gnawing on my own leg. Now something to wash it down. I turned my head to the bowl on my left. How did I not realise? If only I had peripheral vision.. THEY HAD LEFT ME WITHOUT WATER. I panicked, I yelped and chased my tail, (Yes, I know it’s embarrassing, It was a desperate time okay?) what was left of it. I was just a puppy when i lost the ‘ol wagger,’ back in the days where I lived on the farm, out in an open paddock, sweet nostalgia! Although, that is a tale for another time. ’I am going to melt!’ I yapped and yapped, such a hot day and the fan controls are far out of my reach. (so demeaning)  I could feel my button nose perspiration heavily and sweat droplets dripped from my salivating mouth, down my tongue and onto the heartless tiles below. I couldn’t handle the stress. Another ‘skin crease’ (What’s wrong with positive framing? Alright fine, a wrinkle) made it’s impression just above my petite snout as my world went hazy for I moment. I regained my bearings. Time to prepare for hell.

Perhaps if I reached a higher position, I might be able to flick the switch on the aircon and that would ease off my dehydration and since cold air…rises? Surely being at height would be beneficial, only, how to reach it. Jumping was never my strong suit, as a Pug, and thus a member of the master-race, I found my talents lied in intellect rather than in mindless physical prowess. Even so, I tried. I ran at the plastic-covered venereal disease free couch, (maybe not after Riley..nevermind) I lunged -and made it! ‘Nice one Darrel’ I thought to myself. Now to make it to the table. Fortunately, the larger, hairier ape that I live with enjoys watching the exhibition of parkour and free-running so I was reasonably knowledgeable in the field. This task was defintely going to take some parkour-ninja shit. ‘Now or never, are you Darrel or Puggles?’ I jumped off the couch seat unto it’s second platform, immediately I made another jump onto the chair in front, making it, my cute little paws hardly gripped.. slipping! I jumped again, one last final effort, make or break – ‘Yes!’ My front paws landed on the end of the table. I began slipping. ‘No, nooo!’ Desperately I scampered up the table, hoisting myself up commando style. ‘I made it! I am Darrel the nigger pug!’– ninja, I meant  ninja pug. I bounded, so excited, so thirst I had really tired  myself out- ‘Oh god!’ I knocked the salt and pepper over in my excitement, my paws slipped, flipping on my back i found myself sliding off the suspiciously well lubricated table, plummeting, helpless and headfirst into the soulless tiled floor.

'Bitches wanna be with him, rappers hope he gets shot' - Darrel

‘Bitches wanna be with him, rappers hope he gets shot’ – Darrel

I awake in the bathroom, more specifically, a bath tub with no idea how I had arrived there. I groaned. It was filled with cold water, but i suppose it’s the least they owe me, leaving me for dead. I knew it, the torture would only last so long I always thought; ‘one day Darrel, when they are sick of you, you will be out the door in a garbage bag, and maybe more than one. There is no end to the sadism of these Tyrants!’ “Puggles bubby!” Enter, culprit 1! I was filled with rage but had so little energy to fight. ‘Wench! For once I’m having a good day, being able to sleep in without your ridiculous morning banter, just for you leave me here to suffocate on your partly salivated food! YOU LEFT ME HERE FOR A WEEK WITHOUT ANY FLUIDS OTHER THAN MY OWN EXCREMENT!!’(The dictators are Bear Grylls fans, I threw the excrement bit in for emphasis)’ I jumped, yelped and ‘hollered,’ (I don’t know what that word means, I learn’t it from fifty scent) but I just did not have the energy left to utter coherent speech. ”Hush Dary, it’s okay now, i’m so sorry!” The human stroked my hind-fur, unconvincingly, as I stood in the tub, now facing away from the vile animal. Humans just don’t understand. They complain when I sleep and eat too much, expecting me to live off one meal.. A weak. I’ve been living off rations of food and water my entire life, every one human day is a week for me, one day without sustenance or fluids is utterly, stupidly agonising! ‘Wait a second,’ momentary agnosia had been replaced with memories of an accident. They will never see my true power! I thought, if they had seen my skills maybe they would fear me and I would be the master! Alas. Oh yeah, I guess I almost died as well. “What is that big bruise on your forehead from dear?” the female asked. “have you been running into the doors again?”

M.L.I.A (my life is average)

With much unconditional love,

Darrel The Disappointed Pug

'The f**k are you doing?' - Darrel

‘The f**k are you doing?’ – Darrel

Thursday. V.E.T trip, *shudders*. A man in a white coat shoved some tube up my ass and stabbed me with a long cylindrical object. Not too bad, I mean, last time the sadists I live with had me pinned down while he.. inserted.. part of himself into me. I could feel the  rubber sliding in. I could feel it moving in my belly. Oh god,  how i screamed, but there was nothing I could do except just lie there in shame until he finally removed that wretched latex encased hand. So in all respect, this was a ‘good day,’ I almost even managed a grin, but it quickly faded, leaving even more stretch marks in my withered stress-aged complexion. Then, we arrived home.

“Come here Puggles baby, daddy has a surprise for you,” one of the humans announced. I had just got out of the car and was making my way to the front sliding door until it was closed abruptly in my face. “No,no honey, this way!” Swept up off the ground, i groaned momentarily, feeling nauseous. I’ve never had the stomach for man travel. They brought me to the backyard. ‘You..What have you done,’ I thought to myself as my captors grinned at me, as if demons delighting in sadistic torture as they removed a thin sheet from the top of what they thought to be a masterpiece. “It’s you!”  I felt seven dog years wiped off my life expectancy at that moment. I met eyes with the most terrifying and distasteful clay abomination that I had ever seen in my entire life. “Papa made it for you sweaty, now you have a little cute Pug friend you can spend all day with when we are at work!” I felt my heart palpitate. They placed me on the ground before the great beast against all my struggling. “why don’t you too get to know each other?” one of the flesh-monsters said to me as they headed for the door. I yapped and rushed after them, I wanted to plead, “anything, please, I won’t pee on the beds, I won’t complain when the Vet inserts his latex fingers into me, I’m sorry that I’m so wrinkly!” But I was just too shaken to protest. ‘there are no words.’ – Darrel

‘I gotta get out of here, before that – thing gets any ideas! Ah, the gate!’ I remembered that Riley, the little shit of a dog had head butted one of the wooden pickets in the front gate in excitement. Perhaps the fascists didn’t know about it yet? I rushed as fast as my cute little pug-stumps could carry me. ‘Aha! Success!’ Maybe this wouldn’t be such a bad day after all? The bottom right picket of the fence looked flimsy, just a bit of clawing and… ‘Unbelievable.’ For the first time in my life I tasted freedom. Outside the house, alone. This may be one small step for Darrel, but it is one giant step for Pug kind– why am I referencing a significant 20th century human achievement? Damn meatsacks! Least now I’d be rid of them. Yeah. Me. Darrel. On the street, in the hood, ‘da club’, hollerin’ at fine swine and shootin caps! Not that I know what those things are, one of the owners was a fan of some ‘fifty scent’ character for a while, I picked up on his ‘swag.’ Although, that was so long ago, in the days when i was a prisoner! How time flies when you are a dog! Liberation at last.

I saw a flash out of the corner of my colour deficient eyes, the glint of spectacles. One of the tormentors had been watching me through window as I realised that I had been lost in my own dream world for the past five-minutes! The chase begins! I dashed down the street as one of the owners walked at a steady slow pace behind me. ‘Oh god no! This is freedom, fight Darrel, you can win this!’ The enormous shadow of the pursuing being engulfed me as I ran at top speed. The devil spoke, “had your fun Darry?” I panted with exhaustion and fear as  I felt clammy palms close in on me. Then, darkness. “Don’t you ever do that again mister!” i opened my weary eyes to be slapped on the nose by the long haired one. “You had us so worried there!” ‘I hate thursdays,’ I told myself.  Ignoring the persistent nagging of the female, i closed my eyes and drifted off to a  land rich in bone-marrow and ekanuba. Heaven.

‘Still hotter than your Girlfriend’ – Darrel

It was just going to be an easy Friday afternoon. That’s what I kept telling myself, hoping that the thought would bring about some kind of reality. No luck. Every Friday since late December last year, the sadists that I live with have been inviting their friends, who also co-incidently delight in the humiliation of man’s so called best friend. The disgusting foreign couple (they are not disgusting because they are foreign, only because of how they behave towards animals, I am a politically correct canine) bring their little shit of a dog ‘Riley.’ Riley is the most pretentious, ugly, overgrown fucker I have ever seen in my life. Last time he was over, he kept trying to get his head in my ass and almost bowled me over in excitement. His pink ballerina costume made him even more putrid to my cute little sensitive eyes. I would even go as far to say that I suspect he is ‘batting for the other side,’ it’s just the way he looks at me, and it makes me even more uncomfortable to be around him.  I’ve never wished anything terrible on another of my species, but I sincerely do hope that Riley falls victim to bone cancer and becomes tri-pedal.

“Come here Puggles darling dearest.” One of the Tyrants called, ‘Jesus Christ‘, I thought, time to get moving. My fist hiding position was next to the slippers. I genuinely believed that they wouldn’t be able to tell what was shoes and what was dog. Goddamn colour-blindness foils me again. “There you are baby!” Shit was getting real. I bolted as fast as I could towards the open fire-place. This was the last straw. No more pain, my final chance. So close, inches from the flames…*snatch*. The larger, hairier human tore me up off the ground. My haunting, desperate wail filled the room. “Time for dress-ups! Riley is coming! You like Riley don’t you sweetie?.” I could feel three additional wrinkles implementing themselves into my already stress-aged complexion.

I emerged from the night quarters of the two fiends that I live with, half an hour later. Just in-time for Riley to bound-all-over and scare me half to death. As usual, he was in the Pink costume and I was in the Darth-Vader outfit. Riley spoke few words, however when he did, they were largely incoherent and bark-like. He said to me exuberantly ‘Hey Darrel! I missed you! Did you miss me? yap! yap!’ and so on. I replied plainly and earnestly. ‘You are the most disgusting, miserable, putrid, horrid, grotesque excuse for a mammal that I have ever seen’. He then proceeded to bowl me over and hump my right leg vigorously. The ‘controllers’ found this highly amusing, and laughed at my suffering. Just another day in hell.

Just don’t think about everyone looking at your junk Darrel, just.. ah dammit! -Darrel

Just another lonely Saturday mornin’. The dictators dragged me out onto the street and put me on parade. I could feel the eyes of all the voyeurs on my nether-regions, I just wanted to die, the humiliation was so overwhelming, people were taking pictures and everything.

A waitress passing by said “aww he looks so sad,” to which one of the sadists I live with replied, “he’s just wrinkly, it makes him look unhappy”. I just wanted to explain how it was ‘misery that has aged me’ and to beg her, ‘for the love of god,’ to call the RSPCA, but I was just too humiliated to make a peep. The bitch has no idea.

Fortunately, as soon as we arrived ‘home,’ (the labyrinth of carpet and floorboards) and I had a moment to myself, I urinated all over their beds. One day, I will experience true liberation, I know it. However, until that day, I will forever remain dissatisfied with middle-class canine life. They may have won this round, but I have certainly not lost the war.

With love much unconditional love (-what a joke!),

Darrel the Disappointing Pug.
